Pulsar, Fusion Flight

4/1/2022   Fusion Blog Post #2   By: Akhil Surapaneni

The field of fusion isn’t just changing our planet, it’s changing our entire universe. Pulsar is a fusion and space exploration company that hopes to launch plasma engine powered rockets to the outer-reaches of space. The UK based company has made phenomenal progress by creating satellite engines achieving exhaust velocities of 27km per second, a thrust of 300 milliNewtons, and a power usage of only 5kW. Pulsar hopes to utilize electromagnets as a means to control reactions to be used as a form of propulsion. This method cuts out the need for overweight fuel supplies and makes long-distance space travel attainable. Even though Pulsar does not truly utilize fusion yet, they create new possibilities for fusion reactors to directly power space vessels.

Pulsar also has many environmentally friendly effects. They are able to burn plastic in a safe way and then use the byproducts such as HPDE as a fuel source. This also means that thousands of pounds of rocket fuel can be avoided in space travel. Could this safe burning of plastic be used on Earth?

Pulsar is still defining itself and even though they have impressive figures, they still need to fight through their own design challenges to make green space travel real. Imagine if quantum computers, fusion energy, and space travel united together to create the ultimate explorer.

Jeff Bezos backs Fusion Energy

Bezos and others have invested over 400 million dollars, with Bezos personally investing over 100 million, into the fusion research company, General Fusion. General Fusion is looking to change the world with their technology, magnetized target fusion (MTF). MTF merges the features of magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF). MTF carries an advantage over MCF and ICF because even though it has a lower fuel density than ICF, its ability to maintain longer confinement times and improved heat retention allow it to work and be easy to build.

So why does Bezos think this is a good idea and should he? Bezos see's the ongoing problems with the climate and how we as humans need to make a change. Many people are actively trying to fight climate change with small actions, like using public transport, turning lights off, and other many ways you have heard of climate change. Even though these things help stop the increasing temperatures they bandages to a great wound that is merely slowing the time of death. make a change, our planet will be doomed to a dystopian future.
